Why do teeth stain?

In addition to natural discolouration with ageing, teeth can develop staining from other factors as well. Two different types of staining can have a significant impact on tooth coloration: intrinsic and extrinsic stains. Intrinsic stains are those that originate from the inside of the teeth. Extrinsic stains develop on the outside of the teeth. Common causes of both include:

Intrinsic:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Antibiotics and other prescription medications
  • Trauma to the natural tooth
  • Nerve degeneration

Extrinsic:

  • Frequent consumption of beverages like tea, coffee, and red wine
  • Tobacco use
  • Poor oral hygiene habits

How do you take the first step to learn more about professional whitening options?

Teeth whitening is just a phone call away! Drs. Gary and Scott Pearl encourage patients to book a consultation appointment to evaluate their smiles and decide if they are a good candidate for treatment. Whitening treatment provides optimal results with extrinsic staining and on teeth with minimal existing fillings or no crowns, veneers, or bridges. Filling material and the porcelain used for crowns, veneers, and bridges cannot be whitened. Therefore, in cases where one or two crowns are present and match the darker coloration of the natural teeth, replacing these crowns after whitening so they match the improved, lighter color of the natural teeth may be considered.

What methods of whitening are available?

There are currently two methods of teeth whitening available:

For in-office whitening, we utilize Zoom! The Zoom! system is ideal for tough, darker stains, or in cases where a patient has never whitened before, to establish a dramatic initial improvement in tooth coloration.

For home whitening, we offer Ultradent. This approach utilizes custom-made trays, specifically designed to adapt to the teeth, to provide the most effective results at home. Unlike over-the-counter whitening treatments from the drug store, this option uses a higher concentration whitening gel that can only be dispensed through a dental office. That is an effective way to continue whitening your teeth after an initial Zoom! or to manage mild to moderate staining.

Teeth Whitening at Pearl Dental Care

Teeth Whitening Near Me In Pearl Dental Care
Tooth discoloration can be due to many reasons, but whatever the reasons, at Pearl Dental Care, you have teeth whitening options that can help whiten your teeth. Watch the video as Dr. Scott Pearl talks all about it.

What causes teeth discoloration?

Hi, I’m Dr. Scott Pearl at Pearl Dental in Hamden, Connecticut, and I would like to talk about teeth whitening.

People may want to have their teeth whitened because they have staining on their teeth from the food or beverages they consume, such as coffee or tea.

They may have been exposed to antibiotics as a child, have naturally yellow teeth, or people over time feel their teeth aren’t as white as they used to be.

We offer two teeth whitening options at our practice. Both use whitening gels of various strengths to whiten the teeth chemically.

What is the process of the home teeth whitening option?

We offer take-home custom whitening trays where we take a mold of your teeth and provide gel that you can use at home.

We have various strengths of whitening gel that can be used either while you sleep – that’s a lower strength gel or a higher strength gel that is used for half an hour at a time.

Most patients whiten for a couple of weeks and feel like they have a great result, and then they can touch up as needed whenever they feel like it.

What is the process of the in-office whitening option?

Some patients would rather whiten their teeth in our office and have a more immediate result. We offer Zoom! Teeth whitening.

Patients come to the office, stay there for an hour and a half, maybe 2 hours, and leave with whiter teeth. Zoom! Teeth whitening uses a higher strength whitening gel and our special Zoom! Whitening light.

There is a pretty dramatic result for most people, and we also include take-home trays as part of that so patients can do touch-ups at home.

If there is some sensitivity after, which isn’t as common as it used to be, but if patients have sensitivity, we include an anti-sensitivity gel that patients can use at home.

Sometimes, if patients have a wedding or an event coming up and want more immediate results, it is a great benefit to have the in-office whitening.

Feel free to call us and make an appointment to get your teeth whitened.
